Welcome to the Christ Church website!   

Christ Church, Botafogo is the only English speaking Anglican Church in Rio. Our mission is to serve the English speaking community of the city and beyond, whether they be permanent residents, here on short contract or simply passing through this part of the world. In 2009, as in every year since our building was consecrated, we seek to express our faith in God by our words, deeds and actions.

An Anglican Church has been around in Rio since 1810, and has had its own building since 1819, originally sited in the centre near to the Municipal Theatre. The present building has been in constant use since 1944. Christ Church is a welcoming, friendly church for people of all ages and backgrounds, church or not. We meet together every Sunday in the beautiful Church building in Rua Real Grandeza, 99, Botafogo, Zona Sul. The Church is well served by public transport and secure, private car parking is available.

Other Activities

We also meet outside of Sundays, to learn more about faith in Christ in Bible Study and Discussion Groups, in the daytime and evening. On Tuesday mornings at 9.00 am there is a said Communion Service, for nine months of the year, to coincide with the meetings of the Women's Diocesan Association. By request, services can always be taken in other parts of Rio state.

Our church building is also used for Weddings, Baptisms and Memorial services. Please contact the Church Office if you would like to get married here at Christ Church.

We hold an annual Memorial service in November at the English Cemetery in Gamboa and later the same month the Remembrance Day service. Finally, the Revs. David and Sue Weller are available for confidential and private ministry, counsel and pastoral visiting; please make contact as and when you wish.
